Sep 27th, 2022, Beijing - Every September 28th is World Rabies Day. The establishment of World Rabies Day is to strengthen the publicity of rabies, raise people's awareness of rabies, call on everyone to pay attention to the harm of rabies to humans and animals, and strengthen global rabies prevention and control management.
The theme of World Rabies Day in 2022 is "One Health, Zero Deaths". The implication of this theme is that people, animals and the environment are an indivisible, interdependent whole. Only when people realize that human health and animal health are inseparable, can rabies be prevented consciously and effectively.
What is rabies?
Rabies is an acute infectious disease of the central nervous system caused by rabies virus infection.
How is rabies spread?
Animals that carry the rabies virus are the source of infection for the disease. The disease is zoonotic and can be caused by bites or scratches, or licking of wounds or mucous membranes by animals carrying the virus. The incubation period in humans is usually between 20 and 90 days, but incubation periods as short as 4 days and longer than 6 years have been recorded. This variation may be related to the site of injury, the severity of the wound, and the amount of virus introduced. The initial symptoms of rabies can be nonspecific and include lethargy, fever, vomiting, and anorexia, similar to flu. Symptoms progress within a few days to brain dysfunction, cranial nerve dysfunction, ataxia, weakness, paralysis, seizures, dyspnea, dysphagia, excessive salivation, abnormal behavior, aggression, or self-harm.
How can rabies be prevented?
1. Preventive management of sources of infection. Animals raised at home should be immunized, stray animals should be effectively controlled, and wild animals of unknown origin should not be exposed.
2. Keep pets civilized and raise personal awareness. All pets should be vaccinated against rabies, and those who deal with animals for a long time should be vaccinated against rabies in advance.
3. After being bitten by a suspicious animal, the wound should be treated as soon as possible, and the wound should be washed repeatedly with 20% soapy water or running water to wash away the virus that entered the wound as much as possible. Seek immediate medical attention after simple treatment.
